Icelandic Fish Casserole

Icelandic fish casserole is a delicious combination of tender fish, potatoes, creamy sauce, and flavorful cheese. This hearty meal offers a harmonious blend of fresh fish, creamy sauce, and a gentle spiciness from the seasonings. This fish casserole is a feast for the senses and a true delight for lovers of savory dishes.

Ingredients for 4 servings

Fish casserole

600 g           fish fillet (cod, pollock, or haddock)

800 g           potatoes

1                  onion

2                  cloves garlic

2 tbsp          flour

50 g             butter

500 ml         milk

1 tsp            salt

1 tsp            pepper

½ tsp           nutmeg

150 g           grated Edam cheese

Preparation

  1. Peel the potatoes and cut them into thin slices.
  2. Rinse the fish, pat dry, and cut into bite-sized pieces.
  3. Finely chop the onion and garlic.
  4. Melt the butter in a pan, add the flour, and stir well.
  5. Slowly add the milk while stirring constantly until a creamy sauce forms.
  6. Add the onion and garlic to the sauce and let it simmer. Season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
  7. Grease a large baking dish and layer the potato slices, fish pieces, and sauce alternately.
  8. Sprinkle the grated cheese over the casserole and bake in a preheated oven at 200°C (392°F) for about 45 minutes, until the potatoes are tender and the cheese is golden brown.
