The fleeting beauty of Arctic ice: the impressive large-format KUNTH photo book On the Essence of Ice tells the story of the life cycle of ice through epic visual sequences—from its formation deep within Greenland to its radiant disappearance at Arctic sunsets over the sea.
The spectacular photographs reveal gigantic glaciers, deep-blue ice lakes, calving icebergs, and delicate crystal formations in striking clarity. Like a quiet breath, the thought “Only what is transient can be truly beautiful” runs through the work—powerful in imagery, poetic, hauntingly beautiful.
In the concluding epilogue, the drama of climate change becomes vividly apparent.

Stephan Fürnrohr was born in 1972 in Regensburg. He is married and the father of two children. Since 2016, he has served as President of the GDT (German Society for Nature Photography), one of the most important associations of nature photographers in Europe. Fürnrohr runs his own photography gallery in Kallmünz near Regensburg and is a member of the Professional Association of Visual Artists.
A defining thread running through his photography is that his images are neither manipulated nor staged, but depict the world as he sees it. Abstraction already occurs in perception itself and in the choice of viewpoint, framing, and other photographic parameters.
