With a new crew, we’re embarking on an new exciting chapter!
We’re thrilled to bring you once again a wealth of fascinating reports, background stories, and insights from the increasingly spotlighted polar regions.
The world of ice and silence, shaped by culture, science, and political significance, has never let go of us – and now, with fresh energy, new ideas, and concentrated expertise, we’re taking you on a journey to the most remote corners of the Arctic and Antarctic.
Our new team combines experience, passion, and a spirit of adventure: Heiner and Rosamaria Kubny, who have been deeply engaged with the Arctic and Antarctic for over 30 years, bring their extensive knowledge, journalistic expertise, and enthusiasm for polar environments. Together, they have accompanied countless expeditions, reported on scientific developments, and shaped the Polar Journal from its very beginning.
In 2019, the Kubnys were among the founding members of today’s online platform, Polar Journal.
The team is further strengthened by Marcel Schütz, who has lived in Svalbard – in the heart of the Arctic – for over 16 years. As an entrepreneur, adventurer, and Honorary Consul of Switzerland in Svalbard, he knows the rugged beauty of this region like few others. His daily experiences in the High North directly inform our reporting, giving it authenticity and depth.
Team member portraits
Heiner Kubny
Heiner Kubny has been dedicated to polar topics for more than thirty years. As a photographer, he travelled to Antarctica several times each year and, a few years later, discovered his passion for the Arctic as well. With their german multimedia show “Im Reich der Pinguine,” Heiner and Rosamaria Kubny inspired thousands of nature enthusiasts. Through the publication of PolarNEWS magazine and the organization of expeditions to the “refrigerators of our planet,” they opened up new dimensions of polar-focused journalism and travel.
Rosamaria Kubny
Always at Heiner’s side, Rosamaria Kubny joined numerous expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic.
In Antarctica, she was particularly moved by the profound silence — and, of course, by the charming penguins.
The Arctic offered a completely different experience: she was fascinated not only by the polar bears but also by the vivid and colorful landscapes.
Encounters with local communities and their everyday challenges gave her new perspectives on life in remote regions.
Her many journeys northward have also made her witness to the visible impacts of climate change. She takes a keen interest in the political dynamics of the north polar region.
Marcel Schütz
Entrepreneur and Honorary Consul of Switzerland in Svalbard, Marcel Schütz has lived and worked in the Arctic for many years.
With his own local arctic-company, he organizes expeditions for scientists, photographers, and explorers, sharing the fascination of this extraordinary region.
Through his long-standing experience and commitment, he helps make the High North accessible in a responsible way.
As the newest member of the team, he will bring the magic of both polar regions directly into people’s homes and capture the events of the Arctic and Antarctic through compelling storytelling.
